CLIENT
In collaboration with the Municipality of The Hague, project Slim Strandnet, and local businesses, Ampowr delivered a robust battery energy storage system and energy management system at the iconic beach of Scheveningen.
The Slim Strandnet is a smart local energy network that connects municipal assets, beach pavilions, renewable generation, critical energy infrastructure, and energy storage into one integrated system. The goal is to balance local energy supply and demand while reducing pressure on the public electricity grid.

CHALLENGES
Scheveningen is situated directly along the famous, if turbulent, North Sea coastline. This exposed environment required an energy system that could withstand prolonged exposure to salt air, strong coastal winds, moisture, and corrosion.
At the same time, increasing electrification and local renewable generation in the area led to growing net congestion. Peak demand periods added additional stress on the available grid capacity, further limiting Scheveningen’s ability to develop. For the project to be considered a success, it also required a solution that could be integrated into a broader smart energy network, enabling local energy storage to support load balancing and congestion mitigation. In addition, cybersecurity was of great importance to the project, due to the BESS’ connection with local energy infrastructure.
In the Netherlands, net congestion has become a nation-wide problem. Wide-scale challenges require smart, future-proof solutions.
THE AMPOWR SOLUTION
To address these challenges, Ampowr delivered a robust battery energy storage system tailored to the coastal environment and project requirements.
Ampowr delivered and installed an AmpiFARM 10ft Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a power capacity of 200 kW and an energy capacity of 425 kWh.
Due to the coastal location, the system was delivered with C5 corrosion resistant coating, ensuring long term protection against the site’s harsh weather conditions and salt exposure. Time was of the essence As such, Ampowr ensured that the battery system was delivered and commissioned at high speed, enabling the project partners to quickly activate local energy storage as part of the Slim Strandnet initiative.
As the project explicitly required an open-source control layer, higher-level steering and optimization were provided by a third-party. To enable this, Ampowr connected its system architecture and Cosmos EMS. This allowed the external open-source platform to integrate seamlessly for control, energy trading possibilities, and optimization, while maintaining the reliability, safety, and performance of the overall energy system.
The AmpiFARM system allows excess locally generated energy to be stored and used at moments of higher demand, helping to reduce peak loads on the public grid and improve the utilization of available grid capacity.
