Generator steering and battery energy storage systems
Battery Energy Storage System and Energy Sources
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are designed to store and distribute electrical energy efficiently. While sources like solar, wind, and the grid are commonly integrated with BESS, it is also possible to connect a generator to our Energy Management System (EMS) as an additional option for power management when needed.
Generator Steering and Battery Energy Storage System
Generator steering is a function of the Energy Management System (EMS) that optimizes the coordination between generators and battery energy storage systems (BESS). By intelligently managing power generation and storage, EMS improves efficiency, reduces costs, and enhances system reliability.
Generator Steering as a EMS Funcionality (COSMOS)
Generator steering is a key functionality of COSMOS, an advanced Energy Management System (EMS) designed to optimize the coordination between generators and battery energy storage systems (BESS). One of its main advantages is ensuring a dual backup strategy, where both the battery and the generator work together to provide continuous power.
When energy demand is low or excess renewable energy is available, COSMOS prioritizes battery storage, reducing generator runtime and fuel consumption. However, when the battery reaches a low state of charge, COSMOS automatically starts the generator, ensuring uninterrupted power supply. This seamless transition guarantees system reliability, even in cases of extended demand or reduced renewable generation.
By maintaining both the battery and the generator as backup sources, COSMOS enhances energy security, minimizes downtime, and improves operational efficiency. This approach is particularly valuable in remote microgrids, critical infrastructure, and hybrid power systems, where reliability is essential.
Through intelligent generator steering, COSMOS ensures that energy is always available, optimizing both cost and performance while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Benefits of Battery Energy Storage System with Generator Steering
One key benefit is fuel optimization. By reducing generator runtime during low demand and using stored battery energy, fuel consumption decreases, lowering operational expenses and emissions. This is valuable in remote microgrids and off-grid locations where fuel transportation is costly.
Generator steering also extends equipment lifespan. By ensuring generators operate at optimal load levels, the system reduces wear and tear, lowering maintenance needs and long-term capital expenditures.
From a stability perspective, generator steering strengthens grid reliability and resilience. The fast response of BESS enables smooth transitions between power sources, maintaining continuous operation during demand fluctuations or generator failures. This also improves frequency and voltage regulation, reducing power disturbances.
This approach also supports renewable energy integration. By balancing intermittent solar or wind generation with stored energy, generator steering reduces reliance on fossil fuels and creates a more sustainable energy system.
By improving efficiency, lowering costs, and strengthening grid performance, generator steering plays a critical role in modern energy infrastructure.
