Matthew is afgestudeerd aan de universiteit van Oxford en is begonnen bij Kleinwort Benson, waar hij deel uitmaakte van het Energy corporate finance-team. Van daaruit ging hij naar Credit Suisse First Boston om de afdeling European Energy investment banking te leiden. Hier richtte hij zich op het opzetten van een duurzame en schone technologie-procedure en het ondersteunen van de eerste Europese duurzame ontwikkelaars bij het vinden van groeikapitaal en strategische partnerschappen. Hierna bracht hij een periode door in Azi\u00eb-Pacific, in soortgelijke functies.
